Description

St James's School, now converted into houses, was built in 1865, as indicated above the door, with the conversion occurring around 1985. The building is constructed from rock-faced coursed squared Cotswold stone rubble, featuring freestone bands and a decorative tile roof, all in the Gothic Revival style. It has an H-shaped plan, with a hall and classroom cross-wings, and an entrance porch angled to the left.

The street front showcases large gables flanking a recessed center with three lower gables. The end gables each have three pointed windows, consisting of three-light stepped lancets topped with trefoil heads and a quatrefoil above. There is also a circular window with a triple quatrefoil above. Each of the center gables features a similar two-light window with a quatrefoil above. The doorway to the left is set in a gabled porch and has a renewed pointed door with a double-chamfered arch and a hoodmould with a finial at the apex. The roof is banded with red tiles and grey scalloped tiles, featuring a fretted ridge, a central hall ventilator with louvred vents, and a tall hexagonal fleche. The side elevations are similar, with four two-light windows but only three gables. The rear windows of the wings have four stepped trefoil-headed lights with a quatrefoil above. The interior has not been inspected. The principal design quality of this otherwise conventionally-planned school is its Middle Pointed Gothic style.
