Description
Bethesda Methodist Church is a Methodist church built between 1845 and 1846, with a total cost of £1,390, and was enlarged in 1867. It is constructed of pinkish-brown brick with an ashlar front and has a slate roof. The church features a plinth and is designed in a picturesque Early Gothic style.
The exterior has a gabled front with three bays, stepped clasping buttresses with pinnacles at the ends, and offset pilaster buttresses. The coped verge has a finial at the apex. The windows are adorned with outer roll-moulding and inner chamfer, featuring hoodmoulds; the outer bays have tall lancet windows in shallow recesses, while the central bay has triple lancets above a pointed doorway. The doorway is framed by a surround with three orders of pilaster and roll moulding at the head. The returns of the building have four windows arranged in two levels, with lower windows being shallow-arched and upper windows pointed, separated by stepped buttresses.
Inside, the church retains original features, including an entrance lobby with three pointed-arched openings. There is a balcony on three sides supported by pilasters, featuring a solid balustrade with a Gothic arcade, although two sides were in the process of removal at the time of review. At the east end, there is a pointed-arched shallow recess.
Historically, this church stands out in contrast to the surrounding neo-Classical terraces and is a notable example of the "incorrect Gothic" style that characterizes many earlier 19th-century nonconformist chapels.
