Description

29 and 31 The Street are two adjoining houses that include a former post office, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. The buildings are roughcast with alternating flush quoins and feature a stone slate roof, large square stone end and ridge stacks. They consist of a single range of two storeys and an attic, with small rear wings, and a small single storey and attic wing likely from the 19th century attached to the right (No 31).

Originally, each house had two windows on each floor and a central doorway. No 29, on the left, has 2-light wood mullions and transoms with leaded casements on the first floor, while the ground floor has replaced 2-light casements flanking a now-blocked recessed doorway that is accessed by two stone steps. The entrance is on the left-hand return and features a 19th-century porch. No 31, on the right, has 2-light wood mullions and transoms with plain casements on each floor and a central six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed and the rest flush, topped with a flat stone hood on curved brackets, also accessed by two stone steps. There is a Union fire insurance plaque above the door.

Both houses have three gabled dormers: one on No 29 and two on No 31, each with paired leaded casements. The gable ends overhang and have plain barge boards, which are also present on the smaller wing of No 31, featuring large plain paired casements on the front and gable end.
