Description

DIDMARTON THE STREET ST 8287 (south side) 15/89 Church of St. Michael and All Angels II

Anglican church. 1872 by T.H. Wyatt, built to supersede the smaller nearby Church of St Lawrence (q.v.). Early English style. Coursed and dressed stone with snecking, chamfered plinth and stringcourse just below sill level, sprocketed stone slate roof with coped gables and saddlestones, cross finials to nave, concrete tiles on south side. Cruciform with porch at north west end. Plain large lancets throughout with stepped 3-light to east end, and 5 lights in 2 tiers to west end with plain stepped angle buttresses. Porch has coped gable and sprocketed roof, large moulded pointed archway with double timber doors and small column jambs with stiff leaf capitals. Interior: 8-bay nave with arch-braced collar beams and crown posts, with intermediate hammer beams on stone corbels. Wide transept arches on small columns with stiff leaf capitals, chancel arch with vestigial Corinthian capitals and short columns set on to conical corbels.
