Description
The Church of St Michael and All Angels is an Anglican church built in 1872 by T.H. Wyatt to replace the smaller nearby Church of St Lawrence. It is designed in the Early English style and constructed from coursed and dressed stone with snecking. The building features a chamfered plinth and a stringcourse just below the sill level, along with a sprocketed stone slate roof that has coped gables and saddlestones, and cross finials on the nave. The south side has concrete tiles. The church is cruciform in shape and includes a porch at the northwest end. It has plain large lancets throughout, a stepped three-light window at the east end, and a five-light window in two tiers at the west end, supported by plain stepped angle buttresses. The porch features a coped gable and a sprocketed roof, with a large moulded pointed archway that has double timber doors and small column jambs with stiff leaf capitals.
Inside, the church has an eight-bay nave with arch-braced collar beams and crown posts, as well as intermediate hammer beams on stone corbels. The wide transept arches are supported by small columns with stiff leaf capitals, while the chancel arch features vestigial Corinthian capitals and short columns set on conical corbels. The interior includes contemporary fittings, such as a stone and marble pulpit and font.
