Description

Didmarton War Memorial is a war memorial dating from around 1921, with the architect unknown. It is made of local limestone and has a base that is approximately 0.5 meters square.

The memorial takes the form of a cross that stands about 1.5 meters high. It features an octagonal shaft that extends into a cross of octagonal section, with flat terminals on the arms. The shaft is set directly into a slightly tapering, chamfered base that includes a moulded plinth.

On the south face of the base, there is an inscription that reads: "IN PROUD AND / GRATEFUL MEM / -ORY OF THOSE / FROM THIS PAR- / ISH WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES IN / THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918." The east and west faces list the names of the eight individuals who fell in the First World War. The south side of the base also has a carved inscription for the Second World War, "1939 – 1945," followed by the names of three men from the village who died during that conflict. The carved lettering on all faces has been picked out in black paint, which has now faded. The base is set upon modern paving.
