Description

Kingsmead House is a detached house built in the mid to late 18th century, with a rear enlargement from the 19th century. The exterior is roughcast faced on rubble stone, featuring cemented pilaster corner strips and a hipped stone slate roof. The house has a large rendered central stack and small stone end stacks. The 19th-century section is constructed from coursed stone, also with stone stacks and a stone slate roof.

The original structure is a square range of two storeys and an attic, with a two-storey wing on the right and a hipped single-storey shallow wing on the left. At the rear, there is an L-shaped 19th-century wing that is two storeys tall. The front facade has five windows with long 12-pane sashes set in cemented architraves, topped by a small pediment above the central window. The ground floor features four similar windows, along with a central pulvinated stone doorcase that has a dropped keystone and a broken scroll pediment with a large inset urn. The door consists of six panels, with the top four being glazed and the lower two flush. There are small gabled dormers on the returns, and the right-hand and rear wings have 12-pane sashes, mostly with cambered heads. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted that much internal joinery remains, including a stick baluster stair with a wreathed and ramped handrail.
