Description

St. Lawrence's Well, along with an adjacent drinking trough and pump, is located in a recessed section of the garden wall of Kingsmead House, facing The Street. The well is traditionally believed to have been blessed by St. Lawrence around 600 AD, while the trough and pump date from the 19th century. In front, there is a grassy area approximately 17 meters long, with the well, trough, and pump situated against a dry rubble stone wall, which features some vermiculated stone at the top.

The pump is positioned to the right, made of iron and raised on a filled-in basin, accessible by one step. It has a working handle and an oval plate on the stem inscribed with "J FLETCHER / PLUMBER / YATE." To the left of the pump and slightly right of center in the wall recess is the animal trough, crafted from a single hollowed-out stone that measures about 2.8 meters long, with a tooled front edge and a built-up step on the left that contains the end of a circular pipe.

To the far left, within a horseshoe-shaped recess of the wall, is the well, which is a spring that is thought never to have frozen or dried up. It was likely originally accessed by a series of flat stones, some of which are now displaced. There is level access from the grass on the left, but to the right, there are still steps leading up to three large stones placed vertically in front of it and along the rear wall. These three closely grouped features are significant both historically and visually within the village.
