Description
The Congregational Church, formerly known as the Union Chapel, was built in 1843, as indicated by a plaque on the front. It is constructed of coursed and dressed stone and features a shallow pitched slate roof with coped verges and kneelers. The building is a single block with one tall storey, a lower rear wing, and a front porch. The sides have two long round-headed radial glazed 12-pane sash windows set in painted plain stone surrounds. The front has two similar 9-pane sash windows above a central gabled porch, which also has coped verges and kneelers, along with a round-headed soffit to the doorway. The porch contains double doors, each with three flush panels and two flush quadrant panels above. There is an additional door with six flush panels on the right-hand side of the porch. The rear wing features a 20th-century six-panel door on the right-hand return and retains original 12-pane sash windows on each return. There is a small rear shed or boiler room attached. Although the interior is not accessible, it is believed to have an original gallery and possibly original fittings.
