Description
Highfields is a detached cottage dating to 1774, with a 20th-century extension to the left. It is constructed of coursed rubble stone with alternating flush quoins, and has a stone slate roof with a stone end stack on the right and a concrete end stack on the left. Originally a single-range, two-storey building, it was enlarged to the left in the 20th century, the extension not being of particular architectural interest. The front has three windows with two-light, plain stone mullions and leaded casements on each floor. The first floor features a large, centrally positioned keyed oculus with later leading, and a datestone above bearing the initials “ODC” flanked by smooth stones carved with a sun design. The ground floor has a wide, gabled porch and door added in the 20th century. The rear elevation includes scattered small, 20th-century single-light windows and a central sculpted panel with a figure and the carved date 1774. The initials on the datestone may refer to the Cobb family, whose contemporary gravestones in the churchyard of Church of St Lawrence bear similarly inscribed initials and dates.
