Description
The Reading Room, formerly a semi-detached house, dates from the early 19th century and is located on the north side of The Street in Didmarton. At the time of the survey in March 1986, it was being used as a village Reading Room. The building is constructed of coursed rubble stone and features a stone slate roof with stone end stacks that have offset and moulded cornices, along with a similar rear lateral stack. It is a single range of two storeys, with a single-storey rear lean-to that has a large gable, and a 20th-century extension that is not of special interest.
The facade includes three windows with 12-pane sashes set into cambered head openings, and there are similar longer windows on the ground floor. Additionally, there is one semi-circular headed fixed 12-pane light on the first floor of the left-hand return. The entrance is located at the rear and consists of two doors, each with four recessed panes, leading into the rear and the lean-to section.
