Description

The Former Church of Saint Mary is a 19th-century Anglican parish church, built in 1845 by T.H. Wyatt, which is set to be converted into a house in 1986. The structure is made of squared sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs, including a coped gabled bellcote at the west end. The church has a three-bay aisleless nave, a south porch, and a north transept that was added in 1870. It also includes a chancel with a north organ chamber and a south vestry attached. Designed in the Decorated Gothic style, the church has three-light windows on the east, west, and north transept sides, two-light windows on the nave, and single-light windows on the chancel sides, all adorned with hoodmoulds. The exterior is characterized by clasping buttresses, a raised plinth, and a moulded sill-course, along with a gabled south porch. The south-east vestry has gables at each end and an east door, while the north-east organ chamber is gabled and located at the angle to the chancel, with a polygonal porch attached.

Inside, the church features tall proportions with timber roofs, including arch-braced collar trusses in the nave and transept, and a boarded roof in the chancel. The chancel arch and the arch to the north transept are both moulded, as are the subsidiary arches leading to the north-east organ chamber. Most of the interior fittings have been removed, except for the stone pulpit and tiled reredos.
