Description

The Old Cottage is a house that dates from the 16th century or earlier and was raised in the 17th century. It features a timber-frame and painted brick front, with rubble stone at the rear. The building has ridge and east end stacks and a thatched hipped roof. It stands two storeys tall, with the north front displaying exposed framing and upper windows positioned above the original wall-plate. The added upper framing includes angle bracing. There is one central four-light timber-mullion window with leaded lights and a carved lintel, flanked by 20th-century windows on either side. The left side and east end wall have been rebuilt in painted brick. The ground floor includes a 20th-century lean-to projection with a door, heavy square framing to the right, and one 20th-century three-light leaded window. The west end wall is made of rubble stone, with timber-framing visible under the eaves. The rear is primarily sandstone and ironstone rubble, featuring one 18th-century three-light beaded stone mullion window on the first floor to the left.

Inside, there is a central heavy chamfered spine beam with stepped stops and a timber-lintel fireplace. The roof contains two heavy trusses from a previous steeper-pitched roof, and some smoke-blackening suggests it may have originally served as a hall-house.
