Description

Elfin Cottage is a house with origins dating back to the 14th century, featuring a 16th-century inserted floor and alterations from the 18th century. It is constructed from timber-frame and painted rubble stone, topped with a thatched roof that is half-hipped at each end, and has a ridge stack and a stack at the south end. The building has one and a half storeys and includes leaded light casement windows, with some dating to the 18th century and most from the 20th century. The north end wall displays a jettied upper floor, while the east front features a stone and render chimney wall with a blocked former through passage door to the left and a pair of casement windows beyond. Above, there is an eyebrow dormer with an eaves casement pair. The exposed framing to the right of the stack includes a large gable with original barge boards and a pendant finial. On the ground floor, there are two pairs of casement windows, one from the 18th century and one from the 20th century, and a triple casement window from the 18th century on the first floor. To the right, there is a 20th-century casement pair set in rubble stone with exposed timbers above. The rear has been rebuilt in rubble stone and includes one 18th-century triple casement window. A datestone marked "IP 1750" is present, along with a 20th-century southwest wing.

Inside, the cottage retains features of a former hall-house with two raised cruck trusses and one surviving windbrace. An exceptional four-panel compartmental ceiling is present, featuring deep chamfered beams, pyramid-and-bar stops, and a carved oval panel at the center intersection. Additionally, there is a large beam in the room to the south of the passage.
