Description

This is a villa dating from approximately 1834 to 1840. It is constructed of stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof and a brick stack on the left end. The property includes iron railings and window boxes.

The villa is two storeys high with a basement, and has three windows on the first floor. The central window is set back slightly at the first floor, creating wide projecting sections at the sides. Stucco detailing includes Doric pilasters to the ends of these projections, with pilasters extending up from the first floor, and a continuous crowning frieze. A moulded string course runs along the first floor. The first-floor windows are surrounded by tooled architraves. There are wide eaves. The windows are predominantly 2/2 sashes, with those on the ground floor being three-light windows flanked by 1/1 sashes, and featuring elliptically-arched recesses above. All windows are in plain reveals with sills, and blind boxes remain on most of the ground-floor windows.

A flight of nine roll-edged steps leads to a Doric porch with two pairs of columns and an architrave featuring triglyphs and metopes. The interior of the villa has not been inspected.

Subsidiary features include a stick balustrade to the sides of the steps with a wreathed handrail. The window boxes to the ground floor have three levels of rails. The properties on Tivoli Road, originally known as Tivoli, were laid out as shown on Merrett’s Map of 1834.
