Description

14 and 16 Tivoli Road, known as Alexander House, are a pair of semi-detached villas built around 1834 to 1840, with later additions and alterations. The buildings are constructed of stucco over brick and feature a hipped slate roof with stucco party-wall stacks. They are complemented by iron railings and balconies.

The exterior consists of two storeys above basements, with a total of six first-floor windows arranged in a 3:3 pattern, and a two-bay range on the right. Notable stucco detailing includes a ground-floor band with Doric pilasters between the windows, which are paired at the party wall, and a shaped frieze that creates wide, segmental-arched openings above the windows. The projecting outer porches also feature Doric pilasters and an entablature, with a cornice that forms part of the moulded first-floor string course, topped with similar pilasters at the ends and between the windows. The wide eaves add to the overall design. The right-hand range has a plinth with outer and central Doric pilasters, an entablature, and a blocking course, along with two blind openings. The main range includes six-over-six sash windows, which are taller on the ground floor, and six-over-six and eight-over-eight sashes in the basement. The end entrances are accessed by flights of nine roll-edged steps leading to three-panel doors with sidelights and overlights.

The interior has not been inspected. The railings beside the steps feature stick balusters, and the ground-floor balconies display an embellished oval motif.

Historically, the houses on Tivoli Road, originally known as Tivoli, are depicted on Merrett's Map of 1834.
