Description

This is a villa dating from approximately 1834 to 1840, situated on Tivoli Road, Cheltenham. The exterior is of ashlar stone over brick, topped with a hipped slate roof and featuring brick stacks at each end. A wrought-iron balcony is also present. The villa is two storeys high, with a basement level, and has three windows on the first floor. Architectural details include pilasters at the ends and a tooled band at first-floor level. The first-floor windows are 6/6 sashes, with French windows in the centre. The ground floor has a mix of 3-light 6/6 windows between 2/2 sashes, all with segmental recesses above, plain reveals, and sills. The central entrance is accessed by a porch supported by square Doric columns, leading to a flight of eight roll-edged steps and a 4-panel double door with an overlight. The villa has wide eaves. The interior was not inspected during the listing process. A balcony above the porch incorporates a scrolled lozenge motif. Historically, the actor Sir Ralph Richardson was born at this address in 1902. The houses along Tivoli Road, originally named Tivoli, were shown as laid out on Merrett's Map of 1834.
