Description

This is a villa dating from around 1830 to 1840, situated on Tivoli Road, Cheltenham. The exterior is of stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof and end stacks. A wrought-iron verandah and balcony are also present.

The villa is two storeys high, with three first-floor windows, and a two-storey, single-bay section set back to the left. The stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to the ground floor, voussoirs over the windows, and a first-floor band. The outer first-floor windows are surrounded by an incised Greek key motif, while the central window is in an elliptically-arched recess. The windows are primarily 1/1 sashes, with a casement window at the centre, all set in plain reveals. Two roll-edged steps lead to a central entrance contained within a solid, pilastered porch with architrave, and a 4-panel door with an overlight. The building features wide eaves.

The interior has not been inspected. A balcony above the porch displays a scrolled lozenge motif, and the verandah has an openwork frieze. Houses on Tivoli Road, originally known as Tivoli, were laid out on Merrett’s Map of 1834, with several buildings constructed towards the north end.
