Description

A pair of semi-detached villas, built around 1830 to 1840. The buildings are constructed with ashlar facing brick, and have a hipped slate roof with a stucco and brick ridge stack. Features include an iron balcony and railings.

The villas are two storeys high with a basement, and have eight windows on the first floor (arranged 4:4). The central six windows project forward, and the ground-floor entrance bay is also canted forward. The ashlar detailing includes horizontal rustication to the ground floor, topped by a modillion band. The first floor of the central range has Doric pilasters at the ends and between the windows. The windows have tooled architraves; those on the ground floor have a frieze and cornice. The first-floor windows are 6/6 sash windows, while the taller ground-floor windows are 9/6 sashes, all set in plain reveals.

A flight of roll-edged steps leads to the central, paired entrances. The doors are 4-panel, with the left-hand door partially glazed, and are sheltered by a shared porch with a tristyle Doric entablature.

Photographs from 1993 show the interior of No.2, which includes a swept open-well staircase with rod-and-bobbin balusters, and ceiling friezes. The balcony to the porch has a scrolled lozenge motif.

The houses are located along Tivoli Road, which was laid out on Merrett’s Map of 1834, with some dwellings to the north already constructed.
