Description
Tivoli Lodge is a villa dating from around 1820 to 1834, as shown on Merrett’s 1834 map of Cheltenham. It is constructed of ashlar over brick, with brick and stucco end stacks and a concealed roof. The villa is accompanied by attached iron railings.
The exterior is of two storeys with a basement, featuring three windows on the first floor. Ashlar detailing includes a first-floor sill band, a frieze, a cornice with a blocking course, and ornate scrolls to the iron railings. The first floor has 6/6 sash windows, while the ground floor windows are 6/6 sashes flanked by 2/2 sashes, all with elliptically-arched recesses above. All windows have plain reveals and sills, and Venetian shutters. Basement windows are 10/10 sashes. A flight of six roll-edged steps leads to the central portico, which incorporates Doric pillars and entablature with wreaths. It has a panelled, part-glazed door with an overlight containing glazing bars. The words 'Tivoli Lodge' are inscribed on the ground floor to the right of the entrance.
The interior has not been inspected.
Verey notes the villa’s style as being similar to that of J.B. Papworth.
