Description
No. 9 St Oswalds is a villa built around 1830-1834, showcasing a Regency-Gothic style. It features ashlar stonework over a brick structure with a slate roof and brick stacks at the right end. The building has a double depth plan with a central hallway and additional ranges at the rear.
The exterior consists of two storeys above a basement, with three first-floor windows and a two-storey range set back to the right. The outer windows project slightly, and there are stucco details including octagonal stepped buttresses topped with castellated finials, a castellated porch with similar pillars, and buttresses flanking the window above. The outer windows have hoodmoulds, and there is a crowning frieze with a blocking course that features a central raised pediment. The windows include three-pointed lights in straight-headed surrounds, with the central window being stepped and having cusped lights, and 2/2 sash windows, the central ones including margin lights. The central entrance is accessed by a flight of roll-edged steps leading to a studded six-panel door.
At the rear, there is a pointed staircase window with Gothic glazing at the top and casement windows with margin lights. The right return features a pointed window with a 3/3 sash and Gothic glazing at the head. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the houses along Tivoli Road, originally known as Tivoli, are depicted on Merrett's Map of 1834, with several shown as built at the northern end. St Oswalds is noted as an example of Strawberry-Hill Gothic architecture.
