Description
The Phoenix Inn, located at numbers 34 and 36 Andover Road in Cheltenham, is a public house and shop that dates back to the 1840s, with some later alterations. The building is constructed from brick with stucco facades and features a slate roof, along with brick end and party-wall stacks that have cornices and iron balconies.
The exterior of the building is two storeys high and has six first-floor windows. The design includes alternate recessed, narrower entrance bays. Notable stucco details include horizontal rustication on the ground floor, a wide band with a cornice on the first floor, and a frieze above the first floor. The first floor features tripartite multi-pane windows, while the entrance bays have 6/6 sash windows. The ground floor has tripartite windows with 6/6 sashes between 2/2 sashes where original, all set in plain reveals with sills that are raised on feet. There are five entrances, which include four-panel double doors, six-panel doors, and part-glazed doors where original, all with overlights. The right return of the building has 2+2 first-floor windows, with 6/6 sashes where original.
The interior of the ground floor of the Phoenix Inn has been remodelled, and the rest of the interior has not been inspected. Notable subsidiary features include two honeycomb balconies on the right side, with brackets remaining on the left.
This building shares a similar design with other properties along Andover Road, specifically Nos 54 and 56, as well as 60-70 (even) and 72-80 (even).
