Description
The buildings at 27 Whitehayes and 29 Woodside are a pair of semi-detached villas dating from approximately 1834 to 1850. They are constructed with stucco over brick, and have a hipped slate roof surmounted by a gault brick party-wall stack.
The exterior presents a two-storey, 1:2:1 window arrangement, with a slightly projecting central section. Stucco detailing is prominent, including full-height Doric pilasters on either side of the breakforward and two defining the party wall. The breakforward features horizontal rustication, incorporating voussoirs above segmental window recesses. A first-floor band runs around the building, and the windows have tooled architraves. The upper windows are 8/8 sashes and the ground-floor windows are tripartite, consisting of 6/6 panes between 2/2 sashes. All windows are in plain reveals with sills. The entrance doorways have architraves supported by Doric pilasters, a frieze, cornice and blocking course and contain four-panel doors with sidelights and overlights featuring glazing bars.
Internally, the buildings retain original joinery, including panelled shutters. The houses are located on Tivoli Road, which was originally named Tivoli, and were laid out according to a map from 1834.
