Description

Number 18 and Fairmile House are two dwellings, originally a villa, constructed around 1834 to 1840. The exterior is stucco over brick, with concealed roof and brick stacks. The building is two storeys with a basement, featuring a three-window main range and a two-storey-on-basement range with a single first-floor window on the right. The design incorporates a double-depth plan, with a central hallway and a service range set back to the right, and a prominent central breakforward. Stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to the ground floor, drawn into voussoirs over segmental arches to the windows of the main range. Full-height Doric pilasters top the ends, and are surmounted by a frieze, cornice, and blocking course, with a first-floor band. The main range has 1/1 horned sash windows throughout; the ground-floor windows are tripartite, and first-floor windows are in tooled architraves. The basement features 8/8 sashes. A Doric porch with paired columns and an architrave, including triglyphs and metopes, frames the central entrance, which has a panel door with an overlight. The right-hand range has a 4/4 horned sash window to the first floor and modern double-glazed doors with casements to the ground floor. The left return has three blind openings to the first floor and a canted bay to the ground floor. The interior was not inspected. Houses on Tivoli Road, originally called Tivoli, were illustrated in Merrett's 1834 Map.
