Description

A pair of semi-detached villas, St John's Villa and Saxthorpe, were built around the 1840s and have undergone later additions and alterations. The villas are constructed of stucco over brick, with a mansard slate roof and stuccoed stacks with cornices at each end and at the party wall. The attached wall has stone copings and iron railings.

The villas are two storeys with a basement and attic, featuring six windows on the first floor. Stucco detailing is present, including horizontal rustication to the ground floor with voussoirs over the windows. A moulded band runs across the first floor, topped by Doric pilasters at the ends and between the windows, with a pair incorporated into the party wall. There is a crowning entablature and low, coped parapet. The ground and first floors have horizontal-pane sashes, and the entrances have five roll-edged steps leading to recessed four-panel doors, part-glazed with sidelights and overlights. The basement contains 20th-century doors and original three-pane sashes. Attic windows have original three-pane sashes. The interior of the villas has not been inspected.

A ramped and coped wall, to the left, is surmounted by arrowhead railings. Ornate balustrades flank the steps, and remnants of scroll-motif area railings are visible on the right. The facade is largely complete and forms part of a good group of villas.
