Description

66 and 68 Fore Street is a pair of houses dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, which have been significantly altered in the 20th century. The walls are plastered and rendered, likely made of cob and stone rubble, and the houses have a hipped thatched roof with two brick stacks—one at the left end and one in the center. The original layout is unclear due to the 20th-century changes, but it may have originally been one house or a pair of two-room plan cottages. There is a one-room plan wing added to the front of the right-hand cottage (No. 66).

The exterior features two storeys with an attic and a regular five-window front, with the central part slightly projecting and a wing at the front of the right-hand end. No. 68 on the left has small-paned 20th-century casements in the left-hand part, with two and three lights, and a part-glazed door to the right, which is sheltered by a doorhood supported by a rough granite lintel and granite pillar. The central part of the house, which projects to the first floor, has a 19th-century three-light casement on each floor, featuring a taller central light with an ogee head. In the early 20th century, decorative high relief plasterwork with a trailing floral motif was added to this projecting section, which also has a Diocletian window in the gable above. No. 66 to the right has 20th-century two-light small-paned casements and a similar door and doorhood as No. 68. The wing projects from the right-hand end. The interior was inaccessible during the survey but is believed to contain original ceiling beams and possibly other features.
