Description
The pair of semi-detached cottages at 60 and 62 Fore Street date back to the 18th century, with a 20th-century extension added later. They are constructed of rendered cob with an asbestos slate roof. Originally single-cell dwellings, each consisting of a living room with a bedroom above, the cottages were later extended to the rear with additional kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom space.
The exterior is two storeys high, with brick chimney stacks to each gable. The windows are a mixture of 20th-century uPVC and replica timber casement styles, and the doors are modern, part-glazed timber and centrally located. A late 20th-century two-storey flat-roofed concrete block extension is present on the rear of both cottages, along with a small timber conservatory on the westernmost cottage; these additions are not of architectural significance.
Inside, both cottages are entered through a front door that opens into a sitting room via a small lobby. Large original fireplaces with timber lintels are found in the outer gable wall of each cottage. In No. 60, a ground-floor west wall is divided by an oak plank and muntin screen. An early timber winder staircase leads to the first floor, and there is a roughly chamfered spine beam with joists at ground floor. The original back doors give access to the modern extension.
Nos. 60 and 62 Fore Street are a good example of 18th-century vernacular cob cottages, reflecting local materials and building traditions. Despite their modest architecture, they retain a good range of original internal features and are listed for their age and good condition. They contribute positively to the character of the local area and have group value in conjunction with the adjacent White Hart Inn.
