Description
No. 40 is a house located on Fore Street in North Tawton, dating from the early 19th century. It features plastered walls and a gable-ended slate roof, with two rendered chimneys—one axial and one at the left gable end. The current layout appears to consist of three or four rooms, though this may have been altered in the 20th century. Originally, it was likely two separate houses, each with a two-room plan, which may have been a remodelling of an earlier structure.
The building is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical four-window front. Each end of the façade features two-storey canted bay windows. The left bay contains hornless sash windows, possibly original, with 10:20:10 panes on both floors. To the right of this bay is an original tripartite sash window on the first floor, followed by a similar window that has had some of its glazing bars removed. Below this is a mid-19th century sash window. The right bay has been altered with 20th-century casements. Centrally located to the left and right are early 19th-century doorcases with 20th-century part-glazed doors. The interior has not been inspected.
