Description

No. 76 is a house located on High Street in Barkway, dating from the mid to late 17th century. It has been cased, altered, and extended in the early to mid 19th century. The building is likely timber-framed and is cased in white brick with some areas stuccoed. It features a steeply pitched slate roof and consists of three bays, with two narrower bays added to the right. The house is two storeys high, originally having a central entrance that includes a six-panelled door set in panelled reveals, framed by a doorcase with a panelled architrave and a moulded flat hood.

On the ground floor, there are flanking and first-floor flush frame glazing bar sash windows, with panelled architraves and roundels at the upper angles. The eaves are close, and there is a cross axial ridge stack to the right of the entrance. To the right, two small 19th-century bays feature a former shop window on the ground floor with 24 panes, a panelled architrave, and a coved hood. The first floor has a recessed glazing bar sash window with a cambered head and a blind opening.

The left gable end is cased in white brick and has a ground floor 16-pane recessed sash window. A low two-storey wing from the 19th century extends to the rear left, featuring recessed casements and a rear end stack, with a tiled roof. The rear of the main block is also white brick, with chamfered jambs to the openings. Inside, the building has stop-chamfered axial and cross axial bearers.
