Description

The Oak House is a house dating from the mid to late 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed of red brick, with a rendered timber frame at the rear, and features a steeply pitched tiled roof. The building has four bays and consists of two storeys, a cellar, and an attic.

On the ground floor, there is a carriageway in the right bay that has half-height gates with moulded brackets above. To the left of the centre, the entrance features steps with wreathed railings leading up to a six-panelled door that has a rectangular fanlight and reeded architrave. Flanking this entrance are 16-pane glazing bar sash windows, which are recessed and have segmental heads. There is a plinth with a cellar window to the right.

On the first floor, there are 16-pane sash windows, with a blocked opening above the entrance. The roof includes three hipped dormers that have small horizontal sliding sashes. The left end of the house features moulded kneelers at the gable parapet and an internal end stack. There is a cross axial ridge stack located to the right of centre. The rear of the building has scattered casements.

Extending to the rear left are single-storey 18th and 19th-century weatherboarded service and former stabling ranges, which include casements and a ridge stack on a steeply pitched roof towards the house, along with a shop that has a slate roof towards the rear. The interior has not been inspected. The building was formerly known as the Royal Oak Public House.
