Description

Nos. 33 and 35 High Street are a pair of mid-19th century houses located in Barkway. They feature a timber frame on a brick base, with a rendered exterior and a tiled roof that has decorative fishscale bands and crest tiles. No. 33, on the left, consists of 2 bays, while No. 35, on the right, has 3 bays. Both houses are 2 storeys tall and have a cement rendered plinth.

There are steps leading up to central entrances, which have plank and muntin doors set in chamfered surrounds, topped with raking bracketed slate hoods. The windows are 3 light flush frame lattice casements with cornices, and No. 35 has an additional single light window to the left of its entrance. On the first floor, No. 33 has 2 light windows, while No. 35 has a 2 light window in the centre. Ridge stacks with oversailing caps are positioned between the two houses, with extruded stacks at the ends featuring offsets. The gable ends also have similar casements with brackets supporting the bargeboards.

At the rear left, there is a short lower 2 storey gabled wing with a stack. Attached to the left is a later 19th century single storey red brick outshut with a slate roof, which was formerly a shoemaker's workshop and includes an entrance and a canted oriel window. A slate roofed lean-to addition is located at the rear centre, and a 20th century gabled range is situated at the rear right. The interior has not been inspected. The houses are included for their group value.
