Description

This is one of sixteen milestones situated along the historic route connecting Cambridge and London. The milestones were commissioned in 1728-32 by William Warren, funded by a bequest in 1586 from Dr. W. Mowse, Master of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, to maintain roads around Cambridge. This milestone, the sixteenth in the series, was erected on May 29th, 1728, at a cost of £6. The milestone is a roughly 2-meter-high freestone pillar, square in plan, topped with a rounded pyramidal cap. The front face features low-relief shields of arms, representing Trinity Hall and Robert Hare, Dr. Mowse's executor. An iron plate with a segmental top edge was added around 1804, potentially designed by McAdam for the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. The plate displays distances: “LONDON 35/WARE 14/CAMBRIDGE 16”.
