Description

A pair of cottages dating from the late 17th century, with later alterations and extensions. The walls are a mix of cob and random rubble, rendered and finished with gabled ends covered in slate (to the ends) and wheat-reed thatch (to the central section, the oldest part). 20th-century lean-to additions are at the rear. The original section on the front has a three-window front, with a central axial stack featuring a brick shaft. Upper windows are set under shallow eyebrow eaves, all two-light with bars. There are two, three, and one two-light windows to the ground floor, the middle one set within a depressed window arch and barred. Both end extensions have porches, the one on the left latticed and slate-roofed, the other open with synthetic tiling. A half-dormer is on the left, alongside an end stack. 19th-century casement windows are on both end elevations. The rear includes 20th-century additions, including a newel stair turret. Inside, both cottages have chamfered beams; the right-hand cottage's beams feature run-out stops. This cottage also retains a fireplace with a similarly stopped lintel. Original treads and risers may be visible beneath the carpet. The roof, now ceiled, shows large principals, trenched purlins, pegged and halved collars, and is partially visible from upper rooms.
