Description

Bampfylde House is an early 19th-century house located in Poltimore. It is finished in stucco and features a hipped slate roof with lead rolls. The building has a front range with two rear wings and outbuildings on the left side. It stands two storeys tall with a symmetrical front that has three bays; the middle bay is narrower and recessed, while the side bays are separately gabled. The eaves overhang and are supported by shaped brackets, and there are pilaster quoins at all corners along with a continuous plinth. The house has two axial stacks.

The central entrance is tripartite and is set under a moulded canopy supported by four console brackets. Flanking the entrance are two narrow, long side windows with decorative glazing. The front door is a 19th-century six-panel door with four fielded panels. All windows are contemporary timber hornless sashes: the first-floor outer windows have eight panes per sash, while the central window has six panes. The ground floor windows feature six panes in the upper sash and nine panes below.

On the left side of the house, there are three first-floor sash windows with eight panes each, and four ground floor windows with six panes above and nine below. The outbuildings also contain some hornless eight-pane sash windows, but these have exposed sash boxes. Bampfylde House was part of the Poltimore estate and shares a similar design with The Old Rectory.
