Description
Hayes Cottage is a cottage that was originally a pair, built in the 18th century, with later extensions. It features cob construction with a stone plinth, is plastered, and has a thatched roof that is hipped on the left side. The building is one room deep and has a 20th-century rear lean-to. There are two external end stacks made of brick, which are rendered over. The cottage is two storeys high.
The front of the cottage presents a symmetrical three-window arrangement, to which a mid-19th-century extension has been added on the left side, set back slightly. A 19th-century porch is centrally located on the original 18th-century range, featuring a gabled slate roof and a cusped bargeboard. The windows are primarily three-light timber windows, with all but the top left-hand window retaining their original frames and glazing. The original first-floor windows have fixed side lights and polygonal leaded panes. The ground-floor windows, which no longer have glazing bars, also feature polygonal leaded panes and margin panes; the left-hand window retains its original ring-latch. The upper left-hand window and the two windows in the 19th-century extension (both with two lights) have glazing bars and larger polygonal leaded panes.
