Description

Furze Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the 18th century, with a 19th-century extension. The main part of the cottage is constructed from plastered cob on stone rubble footings, while the extension is made of painted stone rubble with some brick. The roof is thatched, with interlocking tiles on the extension. The cottage has an L-shape, with the main block facing north and featuring a two-room layout, including a projecting stack at the right (west) end. A one-room rear block extends from the left end, which has an inner lateral stack, and there is a lower addition on the left side of the main block.

The main cottage is two storeys high, while the extension has one storey with attics. The front of the cottage is nearly symmetrical, with two windows featuring 19th and 20th-century casements that lack glazing bars. The ground floor windows were fitted with diamond-pane leaded glass around 1970, and the first-floor windows have thatch eyebrows above them. The left ground floor window may be covering the original door. The roof is hipped to the right and gable-ended to the left, with the rear block also having a hipped roof. The main entrance is located at the right end of the extension, featuring a 20th-century door flanked by narrow sidelights, which is in the blocking of an earlier opening. To the left of the door are two 20th-century casements, and there is a first-floor dormer above the door, all without glazing bars. The roof over the extension is gable-ended, and the end features 20th-century garage doors. Inside, the cottage displays plain carpentry details where visible, including a braced frame of slender scantling and brick nogging between the two rooms of the main cottage.
