Description

Hillside Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the 16th century or early 17th century, with a 20th-century extension. It features roughcast cob construction under a thatched roof, which has a gabled end and a half-hipped section. Originally, the cottage may have had a three-room, cross-passage layout, but it has been truncated at the higher end and now consists of two rooms. There is a lateral hall stack that projects at the front of the building.

The cottage is asymmetrical with a one-window front. It has a 20th-century panelled and glazed door, possibly leading to the former passage, accompanied by an open rustic timber and thatched porch that extends to the right over a 20th-century two-light casement window with glazing bars. Above this window, there is a similar but larger window in a gabled thatched dormer. A large projecting lateral stack is located to the right of center, featuring a brick shaft and a tiled roof over an oven in the right-hand angle. There is a small single-light stair window to the right, which has a 17th-century chamfered wooden frame visible from the inside. At the rear, there is a large 20th-century French window, and the rest of the windows are also from the 20th century.

Inside, the roof was only inspected from the first-floor rooms. It includes one exposed jointed cruck with a collar and what appear to be trenched purlins, and another similar truss may be concealed. The former hall has a chamfered ceiling beam with step stops, featuring a carved winged arrow design, while rough beams are present at the lower end. A rolled steel joist replaces the former passage partition wall.
