Description
Little Croft is a cottage dating from the 17th century, which was modernised in the 19th century. It is constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings and features a cob or stone rubble stack without a chimney shaft, topped with a thatch roof. The cottage has a three-room plan and faces east. The entrance is located near the left (southern) end, leading directly into the main room, which has a large disused projecting rear lateral stack. A winder stair is positioned at the front of the left end. There is a small 20th-century service outshot at the rear of the central room. The main block is two storeys high, with an irregular two-window front featuring 20th-century casements without glazing bars, and a third first-floor window at the left end that lights the stairs. Two of the first-floor windows are half dormers with thatch lifted over the top. The front doorway has a 20th-century plank door and a contemporary plank-roofed hood supported by wrought iron brackets. The roof is half-hipped on the right side and butts against the rear of the adjoining Old Bakery on the left.
Inside, there is very little exposed carpentry detail. The main room includes a soffit-chamfered crossbeam, although its 17th-century stops have been removed. The fireplace is blocked, and elsewhere, timbers are cased in, with the roof trusses hidden within the partitions. The roof space is not accessible.
