Description
The Old Rectory is a house that was formerly a parsonage, built in 1836. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble or brick, with brick stacks that were replaced in the 20th century and a slate roof. The main block is square in plan and faces south, featuring a double depth layout with a main front and back room on either side of a small front lobby and main stairs at the rear. The front rooms have end stacks, while the rear left room has a rear lateral stack. The doorway is located at the right (eastern) end, leading to a passage behind the front rooms that accesses the stairwell. The rear right room serves as a chapel. There is a lower two-storey service block at the back. The main block has two storeys and a symmetrical three-window front, with French windows on the ground floor featuring margin panes and 12-pane sash windows on the first floor. Panelled stucco pilasters adorn the corners. A verandah with a tented roof and glazed panels is supported by slender cast iron clustered columns, and the central part has been enclosed to form a conservatory in the 20th century. The eaves are plain and the roof is hipped at both ends. The verandah wraps around both end walls. The right (western) end has a similar three-window front, but the front windows are blind. The left (eastern) front features a central doorway with a part-glazed panelled four-panel door, an overlight with glazing bars, and a Tuscan doorcase. To the right of this doorway, the chapel has an arch-headed window with intersecting glazing bars. The service block contains casements with glazing bars and features a brass bell and a small timber belfry on the north-east corner. The interior has been little modernized and retains much of the original joinery detail and chimneypieces. The geometric staircase has an open string, stick balusters, a mahogany handrail, a curtain step, and a scrolled wreath. The chapel features an arched vault with moulded timber ribs and a large carved boss.
