Description

A pair of cottages, likely dating from the early 19th century, with later 19th and early 20th century extensions. The cottages are constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with brick stacks topped with late 19th century brick and a thatched roof, with slate to the outshots and extensions.

Originally designed as a pair of adjoining cottages with a two-room plan facing south, each with a mirror image plan either side of a party wall. Each cottage has a projecting end stack. The outshots to the rear may be original. Number 1, the western cottage, has a two-storey, single-room extension to the rear, projecting slightly from the left end. Number 2, the eastern cottage, has a two-storey, single-room extension on its end. The original cottages were symmetrical with a four-window front, two windows each side of a central doorway. This symmetry has been altered by blocking the first floor right window of Number 1 and the doorway of Number 2, which has been replaced by a window. The doorway to Number 2 is now within the right-hand extension, adding a fifth window to the front. All windows are 20th century iron-framed casements with glazing bars. Both doorways are located behind contemporary gabled porches covered with slate. The main roof is hipped at each end, and the extension to Number 2 is gable ended.

The interior has been largely modernized in the 20th century. No original carpentry is exposed and the fireplaces are blocked by 20th century grates. The roof was not inspected.
