Description
Manor Cottages is a cottage dating from the mid to late 17th century, with a 20th-century service extension. It is constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble or brick stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick, and a thatch roof, while the service outshot has a corrugated iron roof. The cottage has a two-room plan facing east, away from the road, with a central through-passage. The northern room features an outer front corner stack, while the left room has a projecting end stack. At the rear, the central section is slightly advanced, and there is a 20th-century service outshot behind the left room. The main cottage is two storeys high, with an irregular frontage that includes three ground floor windows and one first floor window, which are a mix of late 19th and 20th-century casements and fixed pane windows with glazing bars, along with a 20th-century door leading to the passage. The eaves are notably deep, especially on the left side. The roof is half-hipped on the right and gable-ended on the left, where the end wall is supported by two large buttresses, likely from the 20th century.
Inside, the cottage shows mostly the effects of 20th-century modernization, which appears to be largely superficial. The left room features a soffit-chamfered axial beam with scroll stops, while the right room has a plain soffit-chamfered crossbeam, both dating from the 17th century. The fireplaces have been blocked by 20th-century grates. The roof is not accessible, but the feet of the truss principals are visible, suggesting that the 17th-century roof remains intact.
