Description

The Nook is a cottage dating from the mid to late 17th century, with a 19th-century extension. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with brick extensions. The cottage likely has a cob stack with a plastered chimney shaft made of probably 20th-century brick, and it features a thatched roof, with corrugated iron covering the extension.

The cottage has a two-room plan and faces south, with a large left (western) end stack and a secondary service outshot at the rear. It stands two storeys high and has an irregular two-window front featuring 19th-century casements with glazing bars. The first-floor windows are adorned with thatch eyebrows. The front doorway is roughly central and contains a 19th-century part-glazed four-panel door. In front of the door and the window to the left, there is a flat-roofed 20th-century conservatory. The roof of the cottage is hipped to the right and half-hipped to the left.

Inside, the 17th-century features remain largely intact. The two rooms are separated by a cob crosswall. The larger heated room includes the original soffit-chamfered and late step-stopped crossbeam. Although the fireplace is blocked by a 20th-century grate, the large fireplace is known to still exist behind it. The roof structure is not accessible, but the feet of the principals are visible, suggesting that it is original.
