Description

A pair of cottages, likely dating from the late 18th to early 19th century and renovated in the mid-20th century, are located in Uplowman. They are constructed of plastered stone rubble, possibly with cob, and feature stone rubble stacks topped with 20th-century brick, and a thatched roof with slate additions. The cottages have a plan where each faces south and mirrors the other. Each cottage has a larger room at one end with a gable-end stack and a smaller, unheated room on the other side. Rear outshots are integrated, with 20th-century service extensions to the rear. Number 1 is the western cottage and Number 2 is the eastern. The exterior presents an irregular 5-window front with 20th-century iron-framed casement windows, some of which have been altered, seemingly disrupting the original symmetry of the front of Number 1. The front doorways, positioned at each end, have 20th-century doors sheltered by contemporary thatched hoods. The roof is gable-ended. Internally, the exposed carpentry is plain. The roof space was not inspected.
