Description

Cogswells is a house with a core dating from the 17th century or earlier, featuring additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed of cob with a stone plinth and rendered surfaces, while the street-facing side is made of red brick. It has a thatched hipped roof, with later 19th-century sections covered by two slated gabled ends. The oldest part of the house is positioned at right angles to the road, with a left-hand wing that forms an L-shaped plan and faces the street. The internal angle of the plan is filled with a late 19th-century two-window range that looks out onto the access lane on the left.

The house has two storeys. The front, which faces the street, features a three-window range with three-light windows above, set under eyebrow eaves. The timber casements have round-headed lights, with the central light being taller than the fixed side lights, and they include polygonal leading. An asymmetrically placed late 19th-century open porch features a round-headed timber arch and roundels in the spandrels, along with turned baluster railings. There are square-headed three-light windows on either side of the porch, which have large diamond leaded panes.

On the right-hand elevation, which is the older part of the house, there are three three-light windows above, with lintels at eaves level. The thatched porch has 20th-century lattice work and one three-light window on either side, along with a panelled door. An internal lateral stack is present, and the left-hand side of the building features 19th-century sash and casement windows. The building is reported to have a smoke blackened roof. It is included for its group value.
