Description

Barnfield Cottages comprise two cottages dating from the 17th century. They are constructed of a cob and stone mix, now rendered, and have a gabled thatched roof. Originally, the cottages were likely a single three-room, cross-passage dwelling. They feature an external rear lateral stack and a right-hand internal end stack. The cottages are two storeys high. The front elevation has a five-window range. There are two upper three-light barred windows, along with two 20th-century one and two-light casements. A door, likely leading to the former cross passage, is located on the right-hand side, sheltered by a thatched porch, alongside another 20th-century timber porch. Inside the left-hand cottage (number 2), the main room, formerly the hall, has three axial beams, which are chamfered with hollow step stops, and a single cross beam with step stops where it intersects with the axial beams. The roof space of number 1 was not inspected internally.
