Description

Bassetts Cottages are two cottages, which may have originally been four, dating from the 18th century and modernised in the 20th century. They are constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with stone rubble or cob stacks topped with 20th-century brick, and feature a thatched roof. The cottages are arranged as two adjoining two-room plans facing northeast, with No. 1 on the left (southeast) having a central axial stack that serves back-to-back fireplaces and a secondary outshot at the end. No. 2 on the right has end stacks, with the right stack projecting and including an oven projection. The roof at the right end extends over a 20th-century extension.

The cottages are two storeys high and present an irregular four-window front featuring late 19th-century to early 20th-century casements with glazing bars, alongside some 20th-century casements. The first-floor right window is a dormer. The outer windows of No. 1 appear to block former doorways, with a present door leading into the outshot. No. 2 has a door next to the front extension and a second door that is believed to be blocked between it and the left window. The roof is half-hipped to the left and gable-ended to the right.

Inside, the cottages display plain carpentry details where exposed. The right room of No. 1 features a roughly-chamfered crossbeam and a rubble fireplace with a soffit-chamfered oak lintel that has run-out stops. In No. 2, all early features are blocked or plastered over. The roof has not been inspected.
