Description

DOWN ST MARY COPPLESTONE SS 70 SE 3/160 Nos. 1 and 2 Bassetts Cottages - - II

2 cottages, possibly 4 cottages originally. C18, modernised in C20. Plastered cob on rubble footings; stone rubble or cob stacks topped with C20 brick; thatch roof. 2 adjoining 2-room plan cottages facing north-east, possibly 4 1-room cottages originally. No.1 to left (south-east) has central axial stack serving back-to- back fireplaces and with secondary outshot on the end. No.2 to right has end stacks, the right one projecting with an oven projection. At right end roof is carried down over C20 extension. 2 storeys. Overall irregular 4-window front of late C19-early C20 casements with glazing bars and C20 casements without. First floor right window is a dormer. Outer windows of No.1 appear to block former doorways and present door into outshot. No.2 has door next to front extension and a second door is thought to be blocked between it and the left window. Roof half-hipped to left and gable-ended to right. Interiors have plain carpentry detail where exposed. Right room of No. 1 has roughly-chamfered crossbeam and rubble fireplace with soffit-chamfered and runout stopped oak lintel. All early features in No.2 are blocked or plastered over. Roof not inspected.
