Description
Westgate Cottages are two adjoining cottages located in Lapford, dating from the late 17th century. They are constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with rubble stacks that are topped with 19th and 20th-century brick. No. 1 has a slate roof, while No. 2 retains its original thatch. The cottages face south-west, with No. 1 on the left (north-west) being a two-room plan cottage that has a rear corner stack serving the larger left-hand room. No. 2, on the right (south-east), features a one-room and entrance lobby plan with a rear corner stack. Both cottages are two storeys tall and present an overall four-window front. No. 1 has a symmetrical two-window front with late 19th-century casements that include glazing bars, along with a central late 19th-century four-panel door. No. 2 displays a two-window front with late 19th to early 20th-century large pane casements featuring glazing bars and a plank door. Each cottage has a gable-ended roof. Inside, both cottages have plain chamfered beams, with an axial beam in the heated room of No. 1 and a crossbeam in No. 2; both diagonal corner fireplaces are blocked. The roof has not been inspected.
