Description

The Lapford War Memorial is a granite structure erected in the aftermath of World War I, located on a small green area to the east of the Church of St Thomas of Canterbury. The memorial is in the form of a simple Latin cross, with an octagonal section, that rises from a low pedestal. The square pedestal has rounded shoulders and sits upon a two-stepped octagonal base. The front face of the pedestal bears the primary inscription "IN LOVING MEMORY/ OF OUR LAPFORD MEN WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY 1914 – 1918." A later inscription on the rear face commemorates those who died in the Second World War, reading “ALSO 1939 – 45 WAR”. The names of those commemorated are inscribed on the faces of the upper step of the base, and a recent inscription on one side of the pedestal remembers the Falkland Islands conflict of 1982, listing one name.
