Description
Higher Town Place is a farmhouse that dates back to the 16th century, with a refurbishment in the late 19th century. It is constructed from plastered cob and rubble, featuring rubble stacks, two of which are topped with 19th-century brick, and has a slate roof. The house has a three-room-and-through-passage plan and faces south-east, with the inner room located at the left (south-west) end. There is a projecting end stack for the inner room that includes a 19th-century oven projection, a projecting front lateral stack for the hall, and a rear lateral stack for the service end room. A newel stair turret is located at the rear of the hall, and the rear of the passage is now blocked.
The building is two storeys high and has a four-window front, all featuring late 19th-century horned large-pane sashes with margin panes, including tripartite sashes for the hall and service room. The hall window bay has been brought forward to align flush with the front of the stack. The late 19th-century partly glazed front door is set inside the passage to the right of the hall stack. The roof is gable-ended and extends forward at the front. The hall stack retains what appears to be the original stone chimney shaft.
The interior has been largely modernized in the 19th century, although much of this work is likely superficial as the 16th-century plan remains intact. The hall features 16th-century chamfered and step-stopped crossbeams, and the cob wall at the upper end includes a late 17th to early 18th-century cupboard with a fielded panel door on H hinges. The roof is currently inaccessible.
