Description
Sellers Wood Cottages are two cottages located in Branscombe, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with possible earlier origins. They were modernised around 1985. The cottages are constructed of exposed local stone rubble, with stone rubble stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century materials, and feature a thatched roof.
The cottages are built across a hillslope facing west. No. 1 is at the left (north) end and has a three-room plan, with a 20th-century extension on the left. The center room has an axial stack that backs onto the extension, while the right room has an axial stack that backs onto the center room. No. 2, located at the right (south) end, has a two-room plan, with a rear lateral stack in the left room and a gable-end stack in the right room. Originally, both cottages had a two-room plan each, consisting of a larger inner room and a smaller outer room.
Both cottages are two storeys high. The exterior features irregular front fenestration with seven ground-floor windows and five first-floor windows, all of which are 20th-century casements with glazing bars. The doorways are also from the 20th century, with No. 1's doorway located in the extension and No. 2's at the left end of that cottage. Originally, the arrangement was more symmetrical, with each cottage having a two-window section around a central doorway, though the original doorways are now blocked by windows. The main roof is gable-ended, while the extension has a half-hipped roof.
Inside, the cottages have plain carpentry details where exposed, and the fireplaces are made of stone rubble with plain chamfered lintels. No ceiling beams are visible, and the roof structure consists of slender A-frame trusses with nailed lap-jointed collars.
