Description

The Bakery is a cottage and former bakery, likely built in the 18th century, with possible origins in the late 17th century. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble, possibly with some cob, and features stone rubble stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick. The roof is thatched. The building has a two-room plan with a central entrance hall that contains the stairs, and it faces uphill to the southwest. Each room has a gable-end stack, with the right stack for the kitchen projecting outward.

The exterior presents a symmetrical two-window front featuring late 19th-century casements with glazing bars, although the right window on the first floor is blocked. The central doorway has a late 19th-century plank door and is sheltered by a contemporary monopitch porch. The roof is gable-ended, and the rear pitch extends continuously over the outshots, which cover most of the back of the building except for the northwest end, which includes a possibly 18th-century oak doorframe with a contemporary plank door.

The interior was not available for inspection during the survey, but it appears to have been largely refurbished in the late 19th century, with most carpentry details concealed behind plaster. The kitchen fireplace remains open and includes a bread oven. This building functioned as a bakery until around 1986, notable for the baker's use of traditional methods, heating the oven with faggots.
